Anthony Fauci
1940 –

Fauci and his colleagues were among the first to recognize that the body’s own activated immune system is the engine that drives HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. But his seminal discovery found that even very early in the disease there is always active HIV replication. This discovery created an urgency in the battle against AIDS.

In addition to his research and administrative roles, the physician-scientist also displays the skills of a savvy politician. Fauci’s strategy of bringing advocates into the decision-making process worked to help win support from AIDS activists. He regularly testifies before Congress seeking funding for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and educating lawmakers about the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Fauci’s contributions have helped to change the course of HIV/AIDS research. In 1989 he was instrumental in endorsing a “parallel track” approach to clinical trials, which will gave a larger number of HIV-positive people access to experimental treatments. As a result, scientists no longer think in terms of eradicating the virus but instead focus on the long-term control of HIV. Today, research continues on a way to block transmission of the virus via a vaccine.

Today he is helping to educate the current US administration, becoming a source of factual information to the US public on the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) which causes the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
